Oprah & Redford on the Urgency of Trauma Informed Care
With over 17,000 community screenings, RESILIENCE is one of the most essential documentaries of the past decade. Directed by James Redford, this important film educates about the science of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and the birth of a new movement to treat and prevent Toxic Stress.
Now understood to be one of the leading causes of everything from heart disease and cancer to substance abuse and depression, extremely stressful experiences in childhood can alter brain development and have lifelong effects on health and behavior. However, as experts and practitioners profiled in RESILIENCE are proving, what’s predictable is preventable.
Recently on 60 Minutes, Oprah spoke about ACEs and trauma informed care, divulging how vital it is to understand and treat children with it. Speaking with Tim Grove and Dr. Bruce Perry, as well as victims of ACEs, Oprah succinctly informs about one of the most important and personal topics she’s ever covered, calling it “revolutionary” and “life changing.” The issues Oprah reported on directly relate to our ACEs titles, RESILIENCE and PAPER TIGERS.
Alongside Dr. Pritesh Gandhi and Kim McPherson, James Redford lead a panel at SXSW last week about ACEs, Childhood Trauma’s Footprint on Health. The panel covered the research behind ACEs, and dove into childhood adversity’s impact on adult health outcomes, and the efforts being made to bring this research to public consciousness. Redford stressed the importance that a vast majority of Americans are unaware of this issue, and acknowledged Oprah’s piece as a powerful voice to help awareness.
Redford continue to say that RESILIENCE is a wonderful tool for people on the front lines of this issue, but we need the issue to become a part of the mainstream, like featured on popular television show, to accelerate curvature of awareness.
If you missed the panel or didn’t attend SXSW, you can listen to the full hour on the SXSW website.
